We know that choosing your child’s secondary school is one the biggest and hardest decisions a parent has to make. At Abbey Park School we know that each child is joining us from a nurturing environment at primary school, we strive to ensure we continue to support and nurture them on their journey through secondary school. We recognise that this can be a daunting process, so we aim to make the transition as easy and enjoyable as possible with a comprehensive Transition and induction programme.

Meet Mrs Stevens
As part of our Transition process I visit each Primary school with members of our Pastoral Team. These visits are a great opportunity for us to meet the year 6 students who will be joining us in September and also to find out as much information about them as possible, to ensure we support them appropriately in their transition from primary school to secondary school. During these visits each child will have a 1 to 1 meeting with a member of our staff, to find out about your child’s hobbies and interests, concerns they have and importantly which students they would like to be in the same tutor group as. The students all have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about Isambard School and raise any worries they have.
With the support of our SENCO, I meet with the year 6 teacher and SENCO or support staff if needed to gather all the important information we need to know about each student’s learning. All of this information is then used to create tutor groups.
During Term 6 all the year 6 students are invited to a 2 day Induction programme, during which time they will meet their Tutor, Isambard staff and new tutor groups. The two days have been designed to prepare and support year 6 students through the transition period, build their confidence and equip them with the soft skills that they need to succeed at secondary school.
As part of the Induction Programme, parents are invited into school for an induction evening. This is a further opportunity for us to begin building the valuable relationship between school and home.
This induction is designed to put your child’s mind at rest about beginning Secondary school, give them an opportunity to meet other year 6 students, as well as the older students at Isambard Community School, and hopefully make lasting friendships.
